Shiny new phone!

Just in time for my Australian trip I've picked up my lovely new phone.

I had been hoping to get a HTC Desire, but there are none to be had, from any of the networks. However, the Samsung Galaxy S haas just been released here, and reports suggest it's even better. So far I'm inclined to agree.

The screen is the nicest I've seen on any phone - very bright and sharp. I'm still getting used to the quirks of its version of Android, but it's Android.

My one gripe is the usb port is slightly different to all my other mini usb cables, which is an annoyance.

I will miss the real keyboard of the G1. However it comes with swype installed, which is excellent.

I'm looking forward to taking it to Australia.

Practice with swype for a few days and you'll realise that it's actually faster than on the h/w keyboard. The real trick of using swype is *not* to check every word to see if it's correct. Write a full paragraph, then go back and correct. Tap on the offending words, tap the swype key and it will offer you a selection of words to use instead...

Yes, getting the hang of it. I'm used to Shapewriter, which I was using on the G1, but seems to have vanished from the Android Market. Swype is very similar, but just slightly different, which takes getting used to.

I didn't realised that there's been a changeover from mini-USB to micro-USB, so all my old USB cables are wrong, and one simply isn't enough.

Yeah, the law in Europe states that all new phones from now on must use micro-usb. About bloody time they standardised!

I just hadn't noticed that micro USB is different from mini USB. Now I'm aware of it I know I need to get some extra cables, because one just isn't enough, but it's not such a big issue.

half-looking for an Android phone --I simply won't buy Apple --so I shall check this out. Have fun in Oz.

Definitely recommended.
