We had a fire drill at work this morning. I question the wisdom of having the assembly point directly under the building you're fleeing. Oh well.

If so that would never be allowed here.
That said, ours is in a subway notorious for muggings, lol.

The subway shouldn't too unsafe if there is a big mob of you guys there.

Fortunately my building have more sense than to gather in the underground carpark.

When I was in primary school we had a spate of bomb scares - 3 in one day at one stage! but several a month for a while, they always made us assemble beneath the main building which had very large glass windows - even at the age of 8 we were asking was this a good idea if there really was a bomb...
we were told - don't be silly, it's just someone messing around - but then, that was back in the halcyon days of 1980! I remember the worst thing was we had desk inspections regularly by the teachers to see our desks were tidy and the police/ firebrigade always messed up our desks and we had to retidy them for the inspections! - still, it got us out of class for a while!

Ah Locations for assembly after fire drills.

Our office one is a good 100 metres down the road, outside the pub that most of the staff use for drinking.

Yes, not very smart.

If the building is just burning, it might not be too bad - you generally have a few minutes warning to get out of the way. But if we were to evacuate for any other sort of threat, it really could be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire.

That is a sensible, practical assembly point. The only more sensible one would be inside the pub.

Maybe you could arrange a roll-call system whereby you assemble in the pub and leave your name at the bar so they know everyone's safe...

If they're so confident it's just someone messing around, why evacuate at all? And if the police were taking it seriously, why did they tolerate such a poor assembly point?

Quite - they couldn't answer those questions - they were just going through the motions cos they had too - at the time in Nottingham I can see why it was unlikely to be real - but even so, I wouldn't like to take the risk with my children.
