Jeanie Johnson
Oct. 3rd, 2007 04:45 pmThe weather was horrible this morning, but now the sun has come out. I took a quick snap of the Jeanie Johnson, the replica 1840s famine ship that transported thousands of refugees escaping the famine that gripped Ireland at the time. The majority of the Irish population were almost totally dependant on the potato crop, and when it was wiped out by potato blight, they has nothing to fall back on. Between death and emigration, the population of Ireland fell from over 7 million to less than 3 in a few short years, and the Jeanie Johnson played its part by carrying many of them to America.
