Can anyone tell me what Dreamwidth is actually for? Is it just a clone of LJ that isn't owned by Russians?

Anyway, if anyone's looking for a Dreamwidth invite code, I have several available.

Hi--sometimes I run "Dreamwidth" on a blog search to keep an eye on questions like these. (Hopefully having me comment here isn't totally creepy for you.)

Basically, Dreamwidth is a technical and social fork of LJ, not a clone. A couple of ex-LJ staff got together and decided that LJ wasn't focused on implementing the kinds of features that were important to them, and wanted a more community driven service, so they decided to start a small business based on that service. Dreamwidth's taken the open source parts of LiveJournal code and done a lot of cleaning up and new development on it (this makes it a fork instead of a clone--no clone has made these many changes to the codebase). And because a lot of them still had communities and people that were involved on LJ and wouldn't be attracted by DW (only natural, as some of DW's features just aren't important to some people and they're not interested!), they made sure that interoperability got a lot of work--people can import their LiveJournals and crosspost to LiveJournal from Dreamwidth, so that someone can use both more easily. Development is really going to speed up soon, too, because one of the owners is going to start working on Dreamwidth full time come October.

If you want more information, I'd be happy to expound more, but I didn't want to be boring!

Thanks for the run down. I presume there's a web page somewhere where I can read the full history.

I must look into how to cross post between them.
