I know it's late in the week, but I feel I really ought to put my thoughts on last Saturday's Who episode before the next one comes along. Everything is, of course, shadowed by the caveat that it's part one of a two parter, so it's quite possible I'll feel different about it next week.

This episode sees the return of two of Moffet's previous creations, River Song, and of course, the weeping angels.

The weeping angels are a bit of a surprise, after their last appearance in Blink they wouldn't be an obvious choice for a repeat appearance. Just trick them into looking at each other and you're sorted. Unless it's dark, of course. Oh and anything that holds their image becomes one. And you mustn't look in their eyes. And they don't just zap you in the past, if they feel like it they'll snap your neck.

And River Song is brilliant. She seems a more rounded character than last time, and she's keeping secrets from the Doctor. I wonder what those could be.

some of the previous episodes of this season really felt too rushed, like they needed to be spread over a second episode. The pace of this episode is perfect, really benefiting from the extra time. Doctor Who really seems to work best with slightly longer stories, like the old four part and longer stories.

The combat clerics were cool - not a new idea, of course, but a little edgy for 6 o'clock on Saturday, as is self marriage.

Now for the fun part. I can't help wondering if things are as simple as they seem. We've already established that the angel is on a rescue mission. I can't help wonder if it's the simple good versus evil story we're expecting. What if the angels just want to live in peace? What did happen to the two headed beasties? And is the Doctor on the right side?

Here's hoping part 2 lives up to this great start.
