I never realised quite how mountainous Drogheda is.

I'd been meaning to start cycling for months, but my bike needed a new rear tube, and anytime I was near a bike shop, I didn't know the measurments. Once I got the new tube it took me a week to find time to fit it.

So today was my first attempt at cycling too and from the train to work. The trip to the station isn't too bad. A short uphill stretch leads to a long downhill run into the town, followed by another little hill towards the station, and a final saunter up the ramp into the station.

The railway station boasts the most impressive bicycle parking I've ever seen. Obviously Irish Rail want to encourage people to cycle and leave their cars at home. However, I suspect it's not the parking that puts people off, it's the hills.

But the journey home was the killer. Remember that long downhill run I mentioned? Well, that becomes a long uphill stretch which is fairly steep and really hurts the legs.

It's handy being able to flash past all the traffic, and sneak through the lights, and as a result should be quicker on busy mornings. It certainly didn't take any longer than driving.

And if I keep this up, I'll certainly get fitter.
