Randon Update...

Had a lovely weekend. Decided Friday evening to have a barbecue on Sunday. A few texts and calls later, we had guests coming.

madangie was giving out flyers in town while I went shopping. Went and bought barbecue food and jamesb came over in the evening.
Sunday, collected gas barbecue from parents (cheating, I know, but so much easier). It actually took a trailer to get it to our house. My Dad said he's not in any hurry to have it back. I suspect this means he's thinking about getting a new one.
Angie did a great job on the food. Most of it was cooked or nuked so I wouldn't poisen anybody. The barbecue worked great, and the food came out tasting fantastic. Except for one or two things that got left in too long. We didn't have a big croud, given the short notice, but everyone who could make it seemed to enjoy it. I'm sure there'll be quite a few more this summer, especially if the good weather continues. Thanks tojamesb, Mike, Rory, Robert and Liza for making the effort, and especially special thanks to Angie for doing all the wonderful foodie things.
During the afternoon, we had a call from Tobes, looking forjamesb to let him know he'd won the TAFF. He was well pleased. Congratualtions to him and comiserations to suaveswede.
As Monday was the bank holiday (Ireland has it a week later than the UK), we took Jack off to see Harry Potter. He really enjoyed it, though I think he found some bits a little scary. Yesterday he told his Montessori teacher that she shouldn't go to see it because it would be too scary for her, but he wasn't scared by it.
Wedding plans are progressing nicely. We hope many of you will come along on the day. I'm post details real soon. Just mark October 14th in your diaries...
In other news, I've just hit 10,000 SETI@home units processed. This nudges me into the top 50 users in Ireland. Yes this is an incredibly sad acomplishment. I do hold out hope that one day we will make contact with other intelligent life, but I have my doubts about the current SETI projects ever being fruitful. We're just looking at too tarrow a band in too small a region of our galaxy. But it doesn't hurt to look.
I have been having some fun with some batch scripts (more proberly called Win2K Command Scripts) to download multiple SETI@home units and run them on a couple of computers I have at my disposal at work. While they're not in the same league as PERL or some other scripting languages, the NT-based versions of Windows have given the old DOS scripting language more teeth, and I was quite impressed by what I could achieve with it.
I've been working on the next Brentford Mercury withjamesb, which we should be finishing off tonight. There's some cool stuff in the issue like Robert Rankin's trip to Holywood.
Finally, we've just confirmed that Matt Smith, editor of 2000AD, will be a guest at Octocon, which with Tanith Lee and Dirk Maggs makes for a really impressive line-up.
