lostcarpark: (Lego Jordan F1 Car)

After a spate of recent punctures (which started the day I made the mistake of musing "it's ages since I've had a puncture"), the most recent of which left me racing for a train on an almost completly flat tyre until the tyre started to come away from the rim (just made the train thanks to the station master who took pity on me and held it while I locked the bike), I decided it really was time to invest in a new inner tube.

After the last time, I knew to ask for a slick tyre. The guy's eyes lit up. "We've just got new kevlar ones in, but they're a bit expensive." How much? "Twenty-five Euro." Well worth it if they're less prone to punctures than the old one.

So providing there's no armour piercing debris lying around the streets of Drogheda, I should be sorted.

How about two car punctures on the motorway at once? Expensive!

Ouch! Hope you had AA cover.

At least when something for a bicycle is expensive, it tends to be on a different scale to a car. Last year I got the bike serviced, and it cost over a hundred Euros, but for that they replaced nearly all of the mechanical parts - cogs, chain, geershift and brakes - about the equivalent of giving a car a new engine. Considering the bike is a good ten years old, it's done very well, and is still in good shape.

Is it just me, experiencing a disconnect upon hearing that a specialized part for a bicycle is "expensive" at €25? I was preparing myself for an amount at least twice that. Particularly with Kevlar involved.

Then again, there are shops that really do look out for their customers, and don't assume you're going to just throw money at your bike to have it functioning well.

Crazy(and certainly hoping there's nothing of that sort of debris just lying around!)Soph
