Well, I'm actually looking for suggestions for a new word, because I'm nearly sure it doesn't exist already.

We have...

Synonyms: Two words that have similar meanings

Anagrams: Words that are made from the same set of letters

Palindromes: Words that read the same backwords as forwards

But we don't have a word to describe two words that have the same predictive text entry values. For example, my name has the same keystrokes as "Lanes". "Me" and "Of" is another common one. As you probably all know, some people are not very careful when sending texts, usually because they're they're trying to do something else, like drive a car.

Of course, phones are rapidly getting smarter. I already know several phones who are smarter than their owners. It's only a matter of time before they start being able to work out which word you meant from the context. Then things are bound to get better. Or possibly worse.

In the meantime, I think this phenonym is worthy of a word. I've come up with a couple of suggestions: "textonym" and "cellendrome", but they soung just a bit too manufactured. So I'm hoping that the creative people here can come up with some more suggestoins.

I have every confidence that the OED will be interested.

Gosh!

I just started collecting such words this week as I've started texting a lot more!

Well, approaching this logically, we need to use the word "gram" for "word" as the suffix (well, that's a first thought!) and something to do with keys or letters or buttons for the beginning, and maybe some reference to mobiles/cellphones/whatever somewhere in there.

Transkeyagram? Craptogram? Lexoffgraphy? Keytosis? Wrongogram? Logram (Logos for Word of course!)? Bullogo? Transubstandard? UnGod (it's what you get when you type TNINE into my phone), Translog (or extend that to Translogrythm), Illogicell, Dictionwary, Fiat-inn-cry (Dict-ion-ary, no not funny, but sufficiently weird! Alternatively Dia-thomasy!), a crosskeyagram.

How about ANCIPAN? It's what my phone offers when you type in ANAGRAM? :-)

Some of the swop words Gram->Iran, tonite->tongue, suppose->purpose
(and why does my phone not know about PHONING? Had to add it to the dictionary!)

Some good suggestions there. When we do choose a name for them, perhaps we can dedicate a website to them. Your list will come in handy!

James -- can I please lift this piece verbatim and drop it into the current issue of my fanzine "Convers[at]ions"?
Chris -- can I please lift your reply, cut it a little, and put it in as well?

I'll be handing it out at EasterCon.

You're more than welcome to anything I wrote on the topic... and if any good suggestions come out of it, please pass them on!

Synogram seems the obvious untaken word. But I think cellendrome is lovely (sounds like a wild mushroom though)
