Trains...

Some of you may have noticed my earlier post, though I can't help a few more expressions of concern for my safety and wellbeing would have been in order.

The train didn't turn into a flaming inferno or plunge into a bottomless chasm. However, we were stuck in the middle of nowhere for over an hour. The official story was that a smoke detector malfunctioned. However, people at the front of the train said they saw flames, and I didtinctly smelt smoke, and malfunctioning smoke alarms don't generally cause either. Apparently people in the affected coach forced the doors open and clambered out onto the side of the railway. Eventually the train limped into Skerries, where the fire brigade were waiting. We then transferred to the next train, which was (fortunately) only a few minutes behind (there were several stacked up by then). It was after 8pm when I got into Drogheda, compared to the usual 6:40. Hope that doesn't happen too often.

I went straight from the train to the gym, which helped me to relax a bit. I continued my battle with the rowing machine, and managed to stick seven minutes on the thing. For the last minute I was really pushing it, and it felt pretty good. Had a nice swim and finished off relaxing in the jacuzzi.

Would love to stay and chat, but [livejournal.com profile] madangie's waiting for me in bed...

Oh, and eighteen days to snowboarding!

Sorry for not being concerned but I have travelled the horror that is South West Trains and they frequently do that sort of thing.

FWIW, I was booted off the computer before I had a chance to reply, but I was hoping you were OK, and morbidly wondering what it would be like if we never heard from you again and your last contact with the world was through sms_to_lj... what an epitaph...

Um. Probably not what you wanted to think about ;>

Hope I wasn't sounding like a spoiled child there.

I had to supress a laugh (boss in earshot) when I read this. That would be funny alright (in a morbid sort of way). Must look into Wap clients. I was tempted to post updates during the wait, but didn't want to generate loads of entries.

Here's an extract for people who can't be bothered registering...

"Passengers on the 16.50 train from Bray to Drogheda reported seeing a number of flashes and smoke emerging from underneath a carriage. The company has insisted that there was no fire and that an engine merely overheated."

Well at least one person said they saw flames, and I definately smelt smoke, two coaches down from where the "incident" occurred. At least it's a step up from "a smoke detecter malfunctioned".

Oh, and I took a note of the car number I was on (2929) and spotted it in a siding in Drogheda this morning.

I'm afraid my attitude was "Don't mention the disaster and maybe it won't happen." *cringe*

They told you nothing was wrong, and yet you smelled smoke and heard others had witnessed flames. *sigh* and they wonder why the Irish have no respect for authority??

I like the way they said "We'd like to reassure passengers in the middle of the train..." - sort of secretly acknowledging that passengers at the front of the train would be beyond consoling.

Yeah, if they treat us like adults, we might begin to have some respect...

Appropo the flames and trains theme, I noticed a short filler in today's Irish Times about the Lusk to Skerries train on Monday - or would that have been the same train as yours?

And a big "AMEN" to being treated like adults, if the powers that be want respect from us, that's so for sure!!
