This morning most of the Irish newspapers carried a headline about the government planning to hold a referendum to change the constitution so that mothers of children born in Ireland would no longer have an automatic right to residency. Then I came across today's Get Fuzzy comic, which seems rather appropriate...

Okay, it's not talking about Ireland or mothers of children born here, but the timing is uncanny.

Disregarding what a bastard our current Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (hmm, someone really should explain the middle two words to him at some point) is, the current right is granted to children born in this country, not their parents.

The aim is to stop foreign women giving birth in Irish hospitals allegedly. Personally I think it's because the Minister is evil, ah, bugger, now I'm back to what I said I'd disregard... er, yeah, anyway, it's the kids, not the mothers, the mothers currently have no rights and the referendum as proposed is only going to remove rights, not grant any more.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I understand that children born in Ireland are automatic citizens, but as I understand it, this gives their parents residency. The government tried to remove residency from the parents, but the courts told them they can't do this as it effectively denies Irish citizens their rights. So the government is now moving to take away the citizenship rights of children born here.

Personally, I can't see the voters going for it.
