The 24 hour bus and train strike which was planned for today was called off at the last minute. Which is probably good for the country, but means my plans to take a day off if it went ahead have got astray. So I'm in work, looking out at a rather miserable wet day.

Yesterday was a different story. We had a glorious day for the feast of St. Patrick. It was warm and sunny all day. We took Jack to the local parade in Drogheda, which is probably on the level the Dublin one was twenty years ago. A few really neat floats and some marching bands, but mostly local businesses driving their trucks down the main street with a few flags and baloons and a bit of bunting. The Irish Air Corps were also flying in formation overhead (I didn't know they had enough working planes to do that). I think Jack liked the parade, but he got bored after a while. There was also a bit of a fairground set up in the Saturday market, but there didn't seem to be anything suitable for small children. Angie used the opportunity to hand out flyers for Ann Summers.

Later Jack and I went for a walk around the local area. On the way back a black cat barred our way and insisted on being patted and stroked. It then decided to follow us home. At this point Jack went to talk some girls playing next door. The cat and I sat in the front garden and watched. Angie came out and gave him a saucer of milk and a few bits of chicken (probably a dangerous precedent). Jack declared that it wanted to be part of the family.

Later, we put Jack to bed and then ended up watching television in bed ourselves. I completely forgot that I said I'd tidy up the kitchen. This morning we discovered the plates left in the kitchen most of the downstairs windows left open.

And we had a lodger last night - a black cat that now seems to be named Cleo.
