Greyhound racing, that is!

We had a night out at work last night. We'd had a vote in the office for where to go, between bowling and greyhound racing. I voted for bowling. The dogs won.

I'm not particularly interested in any form of gambling. I have a good understanding of statistics, and I understand how bookies make their money. In the long run the punters always lose (though there are certain people who seem to do well out of it).

But as a night out, it is quite good fun. I've been a few times before, but the big difference I noticed this time was the lack of smoke. God bless the smoking ban, as it had been one of the spokiest places I've ever been.

There were ten races in all. I placed various small bets throughout the evening, and had a few close ones, but no winners until the last race. One of the runners in the final race was called "Never Give Up", which immediately made me think "Never Surrender!" (with the GalaxyQuest theme tune). However the odds were so short (meaning that everyone thought it was a sure thing) that I'd only have made a few cents, so I decided to try for something a bit hards. I put one Euro on a forecast for first and second, and another Euro on a forecast for first, second and third (both with Never Give Up to win, but with different dogs placed).

The race started, and Never Give Up lead the whole way around. It was a close thing for second place, though, and it took a few seconds to get the result confirmed, but the second dog on my 1-2 forecast came in and I won €7.70. My 3rd dog on my 1-2-3 forecast came third, but unfortunately I had a completely different dog for 2nd. Otherwise I'd have won €63.

So I bet €10 and made €7.70 back, so I only lost €2.30, which is my best result ever.
