First Phone Virus Detected
Jun. 15th, 2004 05:36 pmThink you've got your computer proteced from viruses? Well, if you have a Nokia Series 60 phone, think again.
EPOC.Cabir is a worm that attacks the "smartphone", and indeed, any BlueTooth device (even printers). A file is transmitted to the phone which installs the virus (on other devices, the file will just sit there). Once installed, the virus will monitor for any other BlueTooth devices coming into range and transmit itself to them.
The current version doesn't have a malicious payload, apart from drastically affecting battery life of the phone, but history has shown that it's only a matter of time before other variants emerge.
