Why would someone get on the train with a large coffee, sit down and drink it, then try to sleep for the journey?

Someone at work suggested to could be decaf, but I don't buy it.

Must become a paid member again so i can have the rest of my icons back.

Caffeine affects different people in different ways. There are those who will decline a cup of weak tea after 9 o'clock on the evening on the grounds that they "will be up all night". Others, like myself, can have two double espressos at 23:00 and be out like a light an hour later (the bottle of red and two large calvadoses might have something to do with that). Caffeine definitely makes me feel more wired and anxious than it 15 years ago. But it doesn't necessarily keep me awake. Believe me I've tried to use it to keep awake. In my last job. One good thing about my last company is that they make espresso machines (among other things). Actually, they don't make espresso machines. They re-badge a Gaggio machine http://www.siemensappliances.co.uk/site%2FFullyautomaticcoffeecentre%5F82%2Easp - this isn't the machine we had. We had the old design). They do make a coffee maker though http://www.siemensappliances.co.uk/site%2FPorschecoffeemaker_30.asp) as part of their Porsche range.

Well, after all that, I fancy a coffee now.

Like Pmcray said - caffeine doesn't keep everyone awake, maybe that person just likes it for the taste.

For me coffee has NO effect on my ability to sleep. It does affect my digestions a bit - it's an appetite suppresant, it does the dehydration thing, too. It can make me twitch if I'm already stressed or overtired. But it doesn't keep me awake, wake me up or make me feel less sleepy at all. Pro plus appears to do nothing whatsoever.

I know. What's happening?

It did also occour to me that maybe she was afraid that without the coffee she'd fall into too deep a sleep and miss her stop...

I suspect at least part of that comment should've been directed at someone else. My thoughts of "you what?" gave me the clue :)

You're right, I guess the second half is directed at everyone who posted here except you. Sorry, you were the only one that I was addressing specifically, and the rest just got tagged on...

Hardly surprising - I confuse myself sometimes.

coffee does not keep me awake. In fact I sometimes drink milky coffee (like a latte) as a bed time drink.

As above so below

I too am one of those who suffer 'abnormal' effects from caffeine. It never wakes me up, it doesn't keep me awake. I could happily repeat that fellow's feat, I'll sleep anywhwere, anytime.
