Hmmm, not bad.

I liked the build up, and the culture shock aspect. Suffered a little from the usual BBC failure to ever get a convincing number of alien dignataries an import social occasion.

I felt the climax was a little bit of a letdown. It really could have done with a cliff hanger in the middle and a second episode to draw the story out. When the whole thing was over, I felt vaguely unsatisfied.

However the epilogue made up for it. All I can say is woh, what has been happening?

Can't wait for episode 3.

Need a better icon for this...

The destruction of Gallifrey comes from the Eighth Doctor novels. See http://www.whoniverse.org/discontinuity/ED36.php and http://www.whoniverse.org/discontinuity/ED51.php. I don't know much about this and I'd like to know more. I had come across it before tonight, but it's interesting that RTD appears to be sticking with the continuity from the novels. I 'll freely admit it, I don't like it at all.

The novels really branch out! I have to admit I have only, so far, read Star Trek novels and the odd Star Wars novel. These days I am strugling to keep up with my incoming book pile as it is without adding more expanded universe stuff!

I don't have a problem with keeping the novelisations in, providing nothing in the TV series assumes you've read them. The stories have to make sense on their own, and reading the novels just provides extra background.

I got the feeling in the first episode that the Doctor felt guilty about something, and now we have some idea what.

I did lend you all the necessary novels for what happened...

Although I realise I need to read them again, assuming they're officially canon.
