William Hague on Have I got News for you
May. 27th, 2005 10:21 pmI guess nobody saw this because you were all too busy watching Big Brother.
William Hague was this week's celebrity host for Have I got News for you. I have to admit he was surprisingly funny. But I can't say he's done anything to dispel the Tories' image of being a bunch of racists.
I think it was tongue-in-cheek, but you have to wonder...

plus various of their friends. I met (most of) them at Redemption back in February.
The jokes were indeed tongue-in-cheek and I reckon that he didn't have as much say as he should have done in screening the script that the BBC wrote for him. I think he's not as confident as someone like Bruce Forsythe in turning around and saying "no, I'm not doing this material" ... and partly he wants to be out of politics and into entertainment I think ...
... and most of the more offensive jokes were not based on "race", it was more anti-Liverpuddlians etc. and I know at least one person that would/will have gotten very irate at the "stolen car wheels/stolen car" type jokes ... right up there with the news quiz joke this evening about how Liverpool snatched the cup, but the referee made them put it back and play the second half of the match first ... objectionable yes (and not really funny enough either) but it's not racism, it's just bigotry and stupidity ...
... though the word "racist" has started to be used so often to refer to something other than "race" that perhaps I'm just being pedantic.
