When I went for Wireless broadband over DSL, about eighteen months ago, it seemed like a good idea. More bendwidth for less money, and meant that I wouldn't run the risk of Eircom screwing up my telephone line. Once it was installed, it worked like a dream, and I had a 1 meg internet connection.

But in the last year, things have changed quite a bit. DSL has got cheaper, but Wireless hasn't, and DSL has got faster. To bring matters to a head, in the last few months, the wireless has got painfully slow, and at times hasn't worked at all. The last time an engineer came out to check it, he casually mentioned that it used the same frequency range as WiFi, and when he scanned for WiFi routers in the area, he found a total of five of them, a likely cause of interference with my signal. I hadn't realised this when I put in my WiFi router a year ago, but it didn't seem to cause any problems at the time.

So we all agreed that wireless was no longer a viable option in this area, and I made the switch to DSL. My DSL modem/router arrived on Friday, and after a call to tech support because they forgot to include the DSL settings, it all worked perfectly. I was pleased that they sent me out a wireless DSL firewall/router/switch which seems to be behaving itself, and letting me surf from my laptop.

In theory my internet connection is now three times as fast. In practice, it varies from about the same to about a million times faster, depending on how crap the wireless was being at the given time.
