It's early yet, but I'm quietly impressed by the first two episodes of Torchwood.
Gwen's role of the newcomer, stumbling into the top secret organisation. That's only been done about a million times before. Yet despite the rather obvious ploy, the first two stories were both quite strong.
The first episode was interesting. A series of murders we assume must have an alien connection. It turns out the cause is quite earthly, and only the motive extraordinary. On it's own it would be a let down, but the real story is the sub-plot of Gwen's indoctrination into Torchwood.
The second episode churned things up a bit, with an alien that lives off sexual energy. Don't get me started on the science (or lack thereof), but the idea works, and it sets the show quite clearly apart from it's parent, and makes it clear that the later time-slot is there for a reason.
It's reasonable to expect that a new show may take a while to find its feet, so I would consider this quite a respectable start, and I look forward to seeing more.
One thing I wonder is when this is set in Captain Jack's personal timeline. We last saw him on Satellite five, sometime in the future. I'm assuming he has come back to present day Earth from then. The only other possibility is that it's before he met the Doctor in 1941. This doesn't seem very likely unless he found out about the doctor from Torchwood and went back to 1941 because he knew he'd have the opportunity to meet him.
Oh, and no prizes for guessing whose hand Jack has in the jar. I wonder will that feature in a forthcoming episode.
