Can anyone suggest the best (i.e. cheapest) way to book a trip from Dublin to Johannesburg (and back) next year?

Try Expedia.

Then, once you have an idea of the cheapest fares and providers, you can search around and cut out the middle-men. :)

Expedia don't like Ireland for some reason. You can't make a booking with an Irish address, for example. Something about Irish consumer they don't agree with, apparently.

Could still be worth using for price comparison, though.

BTW, what's the word with Octocon 2007?

The Website and Blog haven't been updated lately ...

They have guests and it's definitely happening, and they assure me the new website is coming soon. I will give them another nudge.

You really don't want the cheapest - some of those African airlines can be a bit iffy.

Mind you I´m sure one of the local taxi dudes would drive round to Calais and pick you up if you paid him :-)

Fair point, though all the options I've looked at so far have been with "mainstream" airlines. Air France and BA both look quite reasonable.

I´ve only done Joburg with BA & SAA, boith were fine TBH although my preference would be BA.

Cape Town I've only done with BA, although I have also done the Joburg-CapeTown on a local cheapy airline and that was okay as well

Probably off to Joburgh in a couple weeks time actually - unless the plans change again. werk pah!
