I've agreed a sale on my apartment. I have to confess to being plesently surprised and slightly shocked by the price. Wanna know how much? Oh alright then...

€300,000

That's right, three hundred thousand filthy stinking Euros. I don't mean to brag. I really don't. It's all going to go on the new house, so I don't really get any benefit (apart from a nice house).

I had been hoping for €280K-€290K, so when it went to €291K on Monday I was thrilled. The under-bidder had asked us to give her till yesterday to decide, and yesterday my estate agent was in an all-day meeting. This morning the bidding had gone up in 1's to 296, which I though I had accepted, but before my agent got a chance to convey this news to the bidder, the other bidder had come back with 297, which was promptly beaten by the €300K.

I told my estate agent to accept it quick before they changed their mind.

Well, if you're happy, does it really matter? Backup plan A: get them to give you a little corner of the farm to build a house on. Backup plan B: wait a long time and inherit.

Planners are evil sadistic people who should all be lined up and run over by a steam roller. However, I admit things would be worse if anyone could build whatever they want wherever.

In Ireland we have a slight relaxation of the planning laws for offspring of farmers working on the land, which helps a little, though may not apply in your case (not least because your case is not in Ireland).

I'm going through the fun fun process of organising all the detailed financial aspects. The problem with moving house is that unless you sell your house and move out before buying the new one, you tend to need a bit of temporary finance to get you through the process.
