Well, counting of votes got underway today. This would have been much quicker if we'd gone ahead with electronic voting (a committee was set up to review it, and they declared that you have to run a proper system test, something I know as a developer, but the company developing the software felt was beneath them).
It looks like the government aren't going to do well in the local and European elections. I don't think that's a big surprise.
It also looks like tomorrow we'll wake up in a different country. At the moment I live in a country that says if you're born on our soil you belong to our nation. Tomorrow that will probably no longer be the case. We'll live in a nation where we'll be weighed and measured, and if we are found lacking, we will be told to go.
At present, if we are born on Irish soil, we are Irish. No questions asked. It's a simple fact to prove or disprove. But if we have to have an Irish parent, that becomes harder to prove. I expect there will be many children claiming to have an Irish father, but if immigration services want to make life difficult, they can erect all kinds of difficult barriers. There will be difficulties of tracing lost parents and getting DNA tests. The burden of proof is shifted onto the applicant. Prove you're one of us.
Suddenly I feel like emigrating.
