In my humble opinion, that was the best episode so far this year. I can't wait for part 2. If the second part lives up to the first, it could very well be the best episode of the new series. I anticipate Hugo nominations.

I must get hold of the Paul Cornell novel of the same name!

I totally agree, it was utterly fabulous.

I thought that 'Father's Day' was the best episode of the Christopher Eccleston series, so with Paul Cornell's success at writing great stories, I think they should make him head writer for the next series :)

Father's Day was utterly wonderful, with the minor caveat that the Tardis comes and rescues them in the end in the same way they use the transporter as a "get out of jail free" card a little too often in Star Trek.

I didn't like "Father's Day" at all, but yesterday's episode *felt* right. I'd like to see the novel. Given that the novels have traditionally allowed the writers to deal with the Matter of Who in a more sophisticated manner than has been the case in the direct to screen material, perhaps there should be more interpretations from the NA/LA.

I have to admit to having read the novel but it didn't leave a lasting impression. I'm planning on watching the episode on the plane later.

Interesting. It strikes me as the sort of story that if you read in a novel you might think, "nice story. Shame it's not really canon."

I really must pick up some of the "off air period" novels, as I gather that's also where the whole time war comes from.

Best so far, and I watched it all, the previous had left me going "meh" and wandering off after only a few minutes!
Really enjoyed this one though :) Hopefully part 2 will continue and/or excell.

I think there have been some fine episodes this season, particularly the Shakespeare one. However "42" was very ordinary by comparison - especially with a name that suggested a hitch-hiker connection. It struck me as a poor copy of last year's Impossible Planet/Satan Pit two parter.

I can't wait for part 2 of this one, though. I do find that the endings of some of the two parters don't quite lived up to their first parts.
